What I'm working on, and news and information post!

Some of you may remember this tree from a couple of years back.  I was waist-deep in my "obsession with trees" phase (a phase I don't think I've quite moved out of, actually); and had just begun looking at new ways of making them in fabric. In this case, painting the fabric with watercolour paints, and then quilting it.

I got this far - and HATED it.  So it's been sitting in a box of "I hate these" ever since then.  But after I finished Hiraeth, I thought about this tree again, and ways that I could improve it.  (more on this piece, plus the news and info - after the jump!)

I added some fabric leaves to the tree to augment my daubs of paint, and bulked up the background trees in the same way...

and similarly, added some bits of fabric grass to the already existing "thread grass".

I added two layers of green leaves to cover up the "pine" that had originally been there (boy, what a cock-up that was!); and added a few layers of different orange leaves - which were painted lutradur that I had in my stash.

And then I quilted it.

Not too long ago, I would have called it "done" at this point - but it's a new day  - so this will be continued on Friday and into next week. :)

Now for the news!

First up, last week in I was juried into Group of Eight Fibre Artists (or GOE for short). They're a vibrant group of formerly eight, now ten fiber artists who are talented, productive and hard-working.  I'm really, really pleased to join them and am looking forward to what we accomplish as a group.

And through them, I'll be exhibiting at the following shows over the next several months:

First up, "Taking Flight" (the bird series) at the the Quilt and Fibre Art Festival, and then "Hiraeth" and Taking Flight at the Ontario Network of Needleworkers Conferencesl.  I'll let you know what's going to be where, later as we get closer to the other dates.

And speaking of exhibiting, three pieces of mine are going to be exhibited at the Human Thread Gallery in Chicago, IL in July (where "America Now: Walking While Black" has been exhibited three times in the last year) for a show called "Broad Changes".

Those three pieces are Written On The Body (part of the "America Now" series); Incendiary: Marie-Joseph Angelique, and a piece you're going to watch me make over the next few months
untitled as yet, about Oseola McCarty.

So that's the news!

Now the info:

You may or may not know that Google will be discontinuing their Google Reader service come July.  I was really upset about this as it was my favourite way to keep up with blogs.  I have since been using Feedly another reader service (and though it takes a bit of getting used to, I'm quite pleased with it) and you may find another reader service that you like better; but there is another option!

For those of you who like it all in one shot, you can also subscribe to my blog through Bloglovin.  You can subscribe to mine and any other blog you like that is participating in Bloglovin, and then once daily, an email gets delivered right to your in box that has links in it to all the blogs you're interested in.

You can either use the handy button at the bottom of this page to subscribe to my blog through Bloglovin, or you can go HERE.

And that's it!

Phew! Long post!

See you on Friday with more on the tree. :)

I am all confused on this Blog following issue. I keep reading about it, but frankly am not sure what I use and indeed if I need to be bothered at all.

    Anyway, thanks for the advise.

And loving that tree by the way.

    1. It's not a challenge group, Frauke - its a group of working and exhibiting artists, who ALSO do challenges four times a year. :)

  6. My, my, my I am so impressed with the processes you are using. I had some pieces in the same place this tree was in, and they came to life at a later time also. Isn't it just wonderful. You are really growing in your art work. Best to you in all your endeavors.

  8. I had to laugh at the notion of a hate it box - LOL! I have a "Oh Dear" pile - where things started out so right and then somewhere along the lines it just went south. I do have a rule though - pieces in that project will get done at some point. I love where you took it- sometimes it just takes a bit of time for it to cook.
