And the work continues
As I'm sure you've figured out by now, I decided that the piece should have an undewater theme, so I got busy making a "seascape"; quilting in sand, foliage, stones, even adding a school of fish.
I had an idea that I wanted to do a mermaid (for years, now, I've had an idea to do a mermaid piece called "We Are Mermaids Too" because every picture I've seen of a mermaid is a European mermaid; yet coastal African countries have mermaid traditions too.)
Originally, I intended to do just a mermaid's face superimposed on the left side of the piece, with fishies and perhaps distant merpeople in the background; but when I started drawing the face out, I realized it wouldn't be clear that she was, in fact, a mermaid - she could be standing in front of an aquarium window or a painting - so I decided to put her front and centre with her pet fish.
I also intended that she be a "sketch" of the Wood Witch variety; but against the backdrop of my hand dyed and painted fabrics; she didn't stand out very much.
So I figured she needed to be painted too.
And then she needed to be quilted.
So the work continues...

ReplyDeleteAnother feminine piece?
ReplyDeleteLovely!
Deborah
I can't wait to see this finished. It makes me want to freeze time and put my little ones away for a bit so that I can quilt some art, too.
ReplyDelete:P Thanks Kimberly! The great thing is, it is done! It's the most recent post (today's post, actually) in my blog.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, it's hard to find/make time when you have little ones - it's why I'm glad I discovered my passion for this when my kids were nearly grown. Otherwise, we all would have suffered!
