Wednesday WIP

So, I had this idea: make a luxurious, elegant monochromatic quilt in a luscious range of silks - an homage to a 12 patch, with a tiny linen seam to break up the silks.  Given that those silk fabrics cost close to $500, I thought I should do a trial run with something much less expensive:

All I had to do was perfect a quarter inch seam!

It's not going so well, actually...

In the sewing business I had for many years (sewing formal wear/bridal gowns) I had the opportunity to work with silk dupioni on many occasions. Mixing linen and silk may not be optimal. You might want to focus entirely on the use of silk. This, of course, depends on the final use/size of your textile art piece. Working in the silk is a wonderful experience, however, and look forward to seeing the fruit of your labors.

What are the problems with working with silk and linen?

The quilt I am imagining is a queen size, and I do have enough of the silks to make it entirely out of silk (they're all dupioni with the exception of a chinese brocade which may not be used except as a binding). I'd be interested to know the problems you forsee...

Good luck Kit! I'm sure it will be the world's most glorious quilt to sleep under when you are done!

Apparently, I'm still incapable of making a perfect quarter inch seam. By the time I'm done this cotton/satin version, I hope that will no longer be the case. I wanna make the silk one, I do, I do!

In the meantime, I toil... ;)

Did you get a 1/4" comepensating presser foot with your Juki? I think it comes standard and I LOVE IT! It is a perfect 1/4" seam every time... My 6 y.o can get a perfect 1/4" seam with it!

I *thought* you were supposed to use a 1/2 seam with linen b/c of the fraying BUT I am not brave like you and I have never tried using anything but plain old cotton in a quilt. You may not machine wash it anyway, so maybe it doesn't even matter.

  6. Well, Kit why don't you try adding the strips, but not matching the seams. It will will look just as good and the not matching will be intentional. I just saw a quilt done this way, but none of the seams matched and it was outstanding. If you need more info on this method we can connect.
And who says it has to be a quarter inch, the quilt police?

I probably did, but I've never explored any of the feet but the 1/4 inch, the walking foot and the free motion feet - although I did buy a leather foot as well.... anyway, I'm going to look it up in my book and try it! I'm excited! :) Thank you!

lol - it's not that the seam has to be a 1/4 inch, it's that the strip between the squares has to be a consistent width - in this case, a 1/4 inch. But I like this idea of not matching the seams - I can see a version of it in my head, but please yes - hook me up with a pic of the one you saw! my email is divaquilts@gmail.com

    Thanks!
