WIP Wednesday, The Invention of Pinwheels

You may recall that I posted about making this top last spring.  Well, I finally got around to quilting it, and it's my first finish of 2010.

Holding true to my new determination to take my time with my quilts to let them be what they need or want or are fated to be (*s*); I nevertheless got through this one quite quickly - it's a simple quilt that needed, it turned out, simple quilting.

Nevertheless, I'm quite happy with how it turned out.

I quilted my five pointed flowers (sort of like pointsettias) on the pinwheels, some of my "squiggles" in the sahsing that surrounded them, vines and leaves on the outer green border, more flowers and my not-so-straight triangular lines in the, go figure, triangles.

And hey - did you know that I invented pinwheels? I did! As you may remember, I'm a self-taught quilter and I was still pretty new to the game when one day, I was fooling around with four patch blocks, and started sewing and cutting, and cutting and sewing, until lo and behold I had this "fan" type thing. I ran upstairs with it and showed it to BSP, saying "Look what I made! Isn’t it COOL???!!!", to which BSP smiled and nodded and admired and agreed that yes, it was indeed, cool.

Quilting back

A few months later, I discovered my "invention" was called a "pinwheel" and that they'd been around for hundreds of years.

*ahem*

So that's why I called this quilt "The Invention of Pinwheels". By the time I made it, I already knew they were pinwheels, but to this day, every time I see a pinwheel, I think "I invented those".

'Cuz, I did.

  2. I think the invention of pinwheels is my favorite Kit story. It's just so cute! And you really did invent them since you didn't know they existed...just like when someone first invented them. :)
