Schrodinger's Box

Photobucket Although I took physics in University, I was really terrible at it, and I hired this great tutor who taught me every theory as a narrative. In addition to the work we did for the course, he told me an anecdotal story about this guy, Schrodinger, who either approved or disproved one of Einstein's theories by use of a cat and a box, and something about the cat disappearing.

Likely it wasn't, but I fondly mis-remember that explanation as being a Ray Bradbury type science fiction story: highly entertaining and highly improbable. Nevertheless, when I looked at that pile of fabric the other day, I immediately thought: "Schrodinger's Box!" (I mean, how could you not?) After thinking about that for awhile though, I realized I needed yet more boxes, so, with the addition of some four patches, I ended up with blocks that looked like this:

Cats in boxes, yes?

Eventually, those cats in boxes, became still more cats, in an even bigger box:

In addition to two versions of this rather silly novelty cat print, I used solid black and pink print quillting cottons in the four patches. The sashing and first border is pink linen and the outer borders are cotton lycra (as you know, I almost never limit myself to using only cotton in quilts). The backing is a luscious silk taffetta that I got on sale - regularly the heinous price of $32/metre, it was eventually marked down to $15/metre, and I pounced on it.

As for the actual quilting of it, though I was tempted to try the free hand flowers that I'd worked on with the last quilt , I thought that it would make this quilt TOO precious, so I reverted back to the familiar meander for the large blocks,

little stars in the sashing,

hearts in the pink borders and finally, stippling in the outermost black borders.

I also did teeny tiny little tulips on the binding, although I will NEVER do that again!

So here's the front...

and the back - silk taffetta!
