Problem Child

Formerly known as Spider's Kiss, this quilt shall henceforth be known as "Problem Child".

As you may remember from my previous post about making this quilt, it came into being because of my efforts to make "a perfect block". By the time I'd made five (or was it seven?) I decided that I might as well put them together and make a quilt out of it. Thirteen blocks later, (the best one was finally sent off to the Round Robin group I'm part of) and I put the rest into a quilt.

My goal this year is to quilt all my UFOs from last year at the rate of one per month. That way, I'll be able to enjoy the process of making tops this year guilt free. To that end, I've been working on Spiders Kiss over the last several days. I have encountered endless problems, from skipping threads, bobbins jumping,

needles breaking, thread breaking, needles with eyes too small for my thread or vice versa,

I discovered at one point that I had managed to quilt a scrap piece of backing on the outside of the quilt, and even found at the very end of the process that I had somehow, without noticing, managed to put the backing fabric on unevenly, leaving a 18" x 1 1/2 " swath of backingless quilt.
*sigh*

For the quilting, I relied on an old favourite (stippling the blocks) as well as trying new things, meandering in the sashing,

and after I got tired of all those squiggles, I tried my version of channel quilting on one of the borders (I still can't quilt a straight line) and last but not least, inspired by Crystal at Sonnet of the Moon, I finally finished up the outer border with free motion daisys in the squares.

It was a frustrating and tiring process, which is why Spider's Kiss became "Problem Child", and it has a lot (and I mean a LOT) of mistakes in it, but I learned a tonne about quilting (and about my machine!) during this process. So despite the frustration and mistakes, I'm actually really pleased with it, because it still looks bright and pretty.

Mostly, though, I love it because of how much I learned while making it.

My Beloved Spouse (BPS) asked me what I'm going to do with it, and I decided that I'll keep it around for a bit, but eventually donate it to a worthy cause that will, no doubt turn up.

Now that I've finished my February UFO, I can go on to something fun. And I'm really looking forward to it!
