Online Quilt Festival - Spring 2009

With some encouragement from Amy at Park City Girl and my online friend Crystal as well as Beloved Spouse), I've decided to join in on the fun and play along.

So, this is my entry in Amy's "My Favourite Quilt" Festival!

               Photobucket

It's the third quilt that I made, which I called "Saucy Divo" as it was for my dearest friend, a male opera singer. I wanted it to be as "saucy" as he is, so the fabrics in it are lame, chenille, silk taffetta, velvet, a lovely dark red batik and some others; all beautiful shades of a rich, luxurious red. And then I quilted it with metallic red thread!

Photobucket

It was quite an undertaking for a neophyte quilter - and I see now all the many ways in which I could have constructed and quilted it better, but it was my third foray into the world of quilting and as such, I was really pleased with it, despite its imperfections.

Although it's a lasting testatment to my execution problems, it's still my favourite quilt to date, because it's truest to the spirit of the quilts I want to make and to my vision of the kind of quilter I one day hope to be. And too, I love this quilt because my appreciation and gratitude for our friendship was in every hopeful stitch.

I hope that you like it too.

Thanks to Amy for hosting this lovely online festival, and to you for stopping by.

  24. Gorgeous! What impresses me is the variety of textures within such a tight color pallet - that's RED, no pinks or plums or bricks about it! Keep up the beautiful work :)

  31. I really love this. I think what I find so enticing about it is that although it is the same color, the different fabrics give it amazing richness and texture.

  32. If you had been a little more experienced, you would have never used all those types of fabrics. *S*...no matter what the execution troubles might have been, the recipient must be very happy with it.

You'll be a great quilter with your out-of-the-box ideas.

  34. Quilty Goodness and Sara, thank you for your kind comments. Sequana, oddly, I could never/don't understand why so many quilters never use anything other than cotton and linen, and rarely, silk. I grew up with quilts (that were made by the women of my grandmother's generation), out of old clothes - wool, silk, velvet, cotton, early man-made fabrics, even old sweaters - anything that couldn't be worn but was "too good" to throw out when into quilts. Coming from that history, I naturally think the world of fabrics is my oyster as far as quilts go. Sometimes the fabrics (and even threads!) I choose make quilting a much more challenging job than it needs to be, but I am always intrigued by the results and sometimes, I love the result.

    :)

  35. Beautiful, I've never used anything except cotton so this is fascinating. My grandmother's quilts are more interesting than mine because she went by "use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without". I think we plan too much nowadays.

  36. I like this quilt very much since I love bold colours. I love your blog since you have a natural story telling quality about your posts.

I'm thinking it's why I love your work since what I have seen is silky or even velvety. Cotton is okay but I like for the things I have to be unique and not like I could of bought it from the store.
